Super League Report

Antrim Grammar School Girls’ 1st XI Hockey squad celebrated success last week as they progressed through to the tier B Semi-Final of the Super League for the first time in the School’s history.

The girls began their Super League campaign in a challenging, competitive group. Consisting of Foyle College, Lagan College and Wellington College.

The first game was played on Saturday the 14th September, away to Foyle College. Antrim gave a strong performance and the squad came back to Antrim with three points.  This was a hard fought 4-2 victory and a promising performance to build on for the remainder of the tournament. Saturday 21st September saw another impressive performance as the girls concluded the game 8-1 winners at home to a well set up Lagan College side. In the first quarter Lagan were difficult to break down for the Antrim forwards. However, Antrim broke the deadlock in the second quarter, with a stunning strike from Tara Robinson and confidence grew which set the tone for the rest of the game. The scoresheet saw five different players hitting the back of the net. In their final match, the girls suffered a disappointing 3-1 defeat to Wellington College in a highly emotional contest. Despite their misfortune, the two previous wins meant they finished second in their group and advanced onwards to the quarter finals.

The quarter finals took place on Wednesday 16th October away to Limavady Grammar. Limavady were pipped as the favourites for the quarter- final. However, Antrim remained focused and determined to come out on top. The first goal was scored from a penalty corner by Captain, Ella McCooke assisted by Joely Andrews, in the first quarter. Antrim created a number of chances but could not break down the Limavady goalkeeper. The girls absorbed the pressure of the game and remained cool, calm and collected throughout. The second goal was scored from another Penalty Corner by Captain Ella McCooke, assisted by Joely Andrews. Antrim Grammar were 2-0 up at the end of the third quarter. Limavady came back fighting in the final quarter and scored their first goal after six minutes. Sophie Scott and Julia Garett controlled defence in a collected manor and kept their shape and composure. The final score was Antrim Grammar 2 Limavady Grammar 1.
