SU Weekend 2018

The annual SU weekend took place from Friday, 14th – Sunday, 16th September at Castlewellan Castle. We were blessed with brilliant weather which allowed us to enjoy the expansive grounds and spectacular scenery of Castlewellan forest park. Activities included the annual night walk around the lake, photo challenges, a scavenger hunt, a ‘race’ around the peace maze, the infamous ‘wide game’ and the opportunity to enjoy Maud’s ice cream in the castle ice cream parlour situated in the cellar.

Speakers, Lynn and Ian McKenzie from Carrickfergus, really engaged with the pupils as they covered relevant issues such as: Identity, Anchoring Anxiety and Surviving Stress and encouraged pupils with scripture: ‘Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus’ (Phil 4:6-7).

Pupil feedback was positive with one parent claiming his son said: ‘it was like a family holiday’! Other pupils said they learned: ‘no matter what, you’re never alone’, ‘I know that even when stress and fear blinds me, I am never alone’, ‘I learned that God is in front of me shielding me. I will still see obstacles but God has blocked them from me’, ‘God helps you stop being stressed’, ‘I have learned that no problem is too big or small for God’, ‘I am thankful for those who put so much into this weekend and how amazing it has been. It has helped me to GROW in my faith’.
