Modern Foreign Languages Spring Success
NICILT/QUB French and Spanish Debating competitions
Antrim Grammar School competed in the A-Level Debating competitions against other schools from across Northern Ireland. In both competitions we debated against Bangor Grammar School, winning the debate in each case. We were delighted to be in the unique position of winning the Runners Up title in both French and Spanish. Well done to the French team of Jonathan Boyd, Cavan Boyd and Naomi Clingen and the Spanish team of Beth Vance, Kirsten Hood and Chloe Smyth. Special congratulations to Beth Vance and Cavan Boyd who won Best Speaker prizes in the Spanish and French competitions respectively.
Success in The All Ireland Linguistics Olympiad
Congratulations to Cavan Boyd (Year 14) and Gareth McAuley (Year 11) who competed in the final of the All Ireland Linguistics Olympiad in Dublin in March. From an first round of 1,308 competitors, the boys made it down to the final 100 and after a day’s solving linguistic puzzles and problems, we were delighted that Cavan was placed 16th, winning a Bronze Award and Gareth was placed 5th in the Under 16 category, winning a Special mention.
Eu Young Translators Competition
Anna Mayrs Year 13 was awarded a Special Mention Certificate in the EU wide young translators competition, making her one of the top translators in Europe. Anna translated from French to English.
Talented young Linguist
Year 11 student Tommy Monahan passed the Diplôme d’études en Langue Française level B1 form the Alliance Française Dublin. This qualification is the equivalent of AS-Level French and is all the more impressive as Tommy scored 92%.
