Author, Joffre White Visit
On Tuesday 9th October Antrim Grammar School had the privilege of having a visit from the bestselling author of the Frog and Earthland series, Joffre White. In the morning, Mr. White told Year 8 and 9 students about the importance of reading and writing, and how it’s essential in life, even though he wasn’t the best at literacy when he was at school. Mr. White shared very humorous stories about his childhood and how he became the remarkable author he is now. He was nearly a year behind in literacy at school, as he didn’t like reading; however, a lovely teacher devised fun activities for him, enabling him to improve his spelling. Also, His dad bought him the latest issues of The Beano and The Eagle which led to Mr. White to become obsessed with reading.
Later in life, Mr. White told his nine- year- old son, Chris, stories every night. Chris loved these so much that he asked his dad to write them down and send them away to be published. Mr. White did as his son wished, but his manuscript was rejected. Consequently, he almost gave up straight away! It was then that his nine-year-old son said, ‘Dad, that was only one person, there are many more people in the world waiting for your book!’ Reluctantly, Mr. White sent his writing to another publisher but was rejected again. This happened thirteen more times, before the best -selling authors work was accepted. Mr. White’s talk conveyed the value of perseverance as well as the importance of reading. As we heard – it’s all about finding that “right book”.
In the afternoon, students had the opportunity to attend a question and answer workshop with Mr. White, who had a great rapport with his audience. We were fascinated by the author’s responses to some very interesting questions!
This was one visit which Antrim Grammar School pupils will never forget!
