Monday 9th November saw AntrimGrammar School host its GCSE Celebration of Achievement Evening to honour the success of those who had sat their GCSE examinations this year.

The evening was extremely well attended and the Assembly hall was packed to witness the pupils receive their GCSE Certificates from the Special Guest, Mr David Atkinson, Vice Principal of Portadown College, a former member of the teaching staff at Antrim Grammar School.

The Principal, Mr Stephen Black, commented that “the event was about the success attained by the Year Group as a whole and not about outstanding individual achievements which will be recognised on Prize Day in December”.

He highlighted the facts that of the examinations sat by the year group 50% of all grades were A* or A and that the percentages of pupils gaining 5 or more GCSE’s at A*-C and 7 or more GCSE’s at A*-C (including English and Mathematics) of 98% and 96% exceeded averages for NI grammar schools.  “The pupils should be proud of their performance which augers well for their ‘A’ Level studies,” he added.

Mr Black and Mr Atkinson both emphasised that the success could not have happened without the hard work and commitment of the staff and of the continual support and encouragement of the students’ parents.  The Principal also thanked another of the Special Guests, the Mayor of Antrim, Adrian Cochrane-Watson for his and the Council’s continued support for AntrimGrammar School.

Students then gave a presentation on their reflections since coming to AntrimGrammar School with contributions highlighting a variety of activities including Performing Arts, Music, Duke of Edinburgh and Sport.  The evening concluded with an outstanding musical interlude performed on piano by a member of the Year Group, Miriam Roll who is currently on a year’s exchange from Germany, which was received enthusiastically by all present.
